Hello again! Recently I shared the reasons behind joining the #HertilityTribe and wanting to have a Hertility Test. I also recently shared how easy it was to do the test at home on my Instagram stories (It is saved to my highlights if you missed it!)
Just to recap – when you order your Hertility test, you complete a questionnaire that will enable them to provide a personalised test result based on any symptoms/contraceptives/health conditions you currently have. They also provide specific advice based on if you are currently TTC.
They also test several core aspects of your reproductive health:
– Ovarian reserve and fertility
– Ovulation and period
– Androgen Hormone Health
– Gerneral Hormone Health
Well now I have my test results to share with you. The test results are explained so clearly, which each part of the test detailed with the reasons why it is tested and what your results mean.
AMH (Anti Mullerian Hormone)
This is a protein hormone produced by the follicles in your ovaries where your eggs grow. They test is because it is a good indication of your ‘ovarian reserve’ (aka how many eggs you have left).
Mine came back within the lower normal range for someone who is my age. Although other factors can affect your chances of getting pregnant, this is really good to know that this is not a concern.
FSH (Follicle-stimulating hormone)
This is produced by the pituitary gland and helps control your menstrual cycle. Once released it stimulates the ovaries to produce your eggs. This is tested to help diagnose or evaluate a number of reproductive health matters including menopause, PCOS, ovarian cysts, or fertility problems.
Again mine came back within the normal range which is a massive relief, especially when I remember this with some of my other results further down.
LH (Luteinising Hormone)
This is produced and released by cells in the pituitary gland. It is important in regulating the function of your ovaries and in ensuring an egg is released each month. This is tested as it alerts your body that it is time to ovulate. The fine tuning of LH is vital to maintaining fertility.
Although it was on the lower side, this came back in the normal range so is no cause for concern again.
OEST (17-Beta Oestradiol)
This is a type of oestrogen, it is produced by your eggs and sets the rest of the reproductive cycle in motion. This is tested as it indicates how well the ovaries are working and can give an insight into abnormal periods, bleeding and fertility.
Mine again is on the edge of ‘low’ however is within the normal range. The FSH, LH and OEST tests are to give the overall review of the hormones associated with regulating your menstrual cycle. Mine are all within range, however I do have irregular periods so further investigations may be required. (Although I am waiting to see if they settle now after having the implant removed as I am a lot older now than before so maybe my hormones have settled)
Testosterone is produced by the ovaries and the adrenal glands in women, this is then converted to the primary sex hormone oestradiol. It is tested as it plays an important role in bone health, breast health, fertility, sex drive, and menstrual and vaginal health. Testing testosterone can also highlight health conditions such as PCOS.
Mine has come back slightly high (outside of the normal range) this is coupled with the next test.
SHBG (Sex Hormone Binding Globulin)
This binds to the main sex hormones, oestrogen and testosterone, to deactivate them. This keeps your hormones regulated and ensures there is no excess. This is tested to find out how much testosterone is going into the body’s tissues. This can help determine the cause of: irregular or missed periods, infertility, acne and excess facial/body hair.
This has come back low (outside of the normal range). With these two test results, it is a common result for women with PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome). This is not something I have ever been diagnosed with however I do have a number of the symptoms (irregular/painful/heavy periods, excess body hair, acne).
TSH (Thyroid stimulating hormone)
This is produced by the pituitary gland in the brain. It is responsible for regulating the amount of thyroid hormones released by the thyroid gland in your neck. This is tested to determine the underlying cause of abnormal thyroid hormone levels. TSH is also used to screen of under/overactive thyroid as it’s levels can affect ovulation.
This has come back in the normal range which is great news for me! As you may have read in a previous post, I am currently on medication for an underactive thyroid, so for this to come back normal means my medication must be working well! Such a relief that this is getting under control.
FT4 (Free Thyroxine)
This is one of the two hormones produced by the thyroid. T4 is the inactive form of the hormone which is then converted into T3 by your liver and kidneys, and controls your metabolism, heart and digestive function. This is tested to check irregular periods, fertility problems and an overactive thyroid.
Mine has come back in the normal range again, so as above really excited that this is all coming back normal now.
Overall I am quite calm. I’m going to continue with my original plan to spend this year focussing on my physical health and for health reasons lose weight. There is a possibility that my T2 and SHBG tests came back outside of the normal range due to my weight, so before I panic I need to lose weight for any potential future child’s health, and for my health. Once my BMI is below a certain number, I shall be purchasing another Hertility test and seeing where we are. If there are any causes for concern at that point, I shall follow up with my doctor.
This was quite a long post, but I hope you found it really informative/helpful! Although there’s a bit about my own personal results, I hope it gave you some understanding about what Hertility do, and what hormones are working behind the scenes for your fertility, I know I learnt a lot when I got these results.
